County accepting applications for summer jobs

An informational session about the program will be offered Thursday at 6 p.m. in Walnut Building Room 101 at Wayne Community College. County staff will be on hand to answer questions and applicants can apply for jobs during the event.

The Summer Youth Employment Program will be from June 19 to July 28 and will pay at $12 per hour up to 20 hours per week, said Joel Gillie, Wayne County public information officer.

The program will offer 40 jobs with employees working in every county department, Gillie said.

Participants will gain valuable skills and experience in local government, financial literacy and workplace training. Applications for the summer of 2024 are now open, with an application deadline of April 28.

Applications for the program are being accepted at www.waynegov.com/summeryouth. In-person applications can also be submitted through Wayne County Human Resources at 134 N. John St.

Wayne County Commissioner Chris Gurley said the program not only provides valuable opportunities for youth to gain practical skills and experience, but reinforces the county’s commitment to investing in its future.

“Wayne County is a great place to work, with job opportunities in a variety of fields,” Gurley said. “This program helps highlight the many roles we have in local government in hopes that the participants will be excited to apply with us in the future.”

The program allows participants to earn credentials from Wayne Community College, Gillie said.
